Restoring Rights

By:KB - March 29, 2015

Update-6-16-2015- Helping Hands Initiative, Inc. in-conjunction with other local community organizations and the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition will sponsor a Restoration of Rights rally and community event on Saturday, June 17, 2015 from 12pm - 4pm at  the Salvation Army Community Center 600 Rosemary Ave. West Palm Beach, FL 33401. Between 5TH street and 6TH street. The event is open to the public and will feature a cook-out, free BBQ, refreshments and much more.

Florida being one of only three states that strip all individuals with past felony convictions of their civil rights including their fundamental right to vote, even after completion of their sentences. Over 1.5 million Floridians are effected by this civil rights ban.One goal of the event is to raise the level of discussion and consciousness as to the injustice and harm these laws are causing to our communities.

Attorney General Eric Holder put it this way, laws that disenfranchise millions of Americans "unnecessary  and unjust" and saying they are rooted in "centuries-old conceptions of justice that were too often based on exclusion, animus, and fear"
